I think in some way or the other, the concept of reincarnation is found in every culture and every religion. And reincarnation, if you understand this term as widely applicable, rebirth I mean, not the Hindu mythology of reincarnation. Of course, that is found in one particular religion especially or a few religions and no more. But in superstitions of every religion, you find the reappearance of souls and spirits and their constant establishment of contacts with the people they have left behind.
And this is something which is common to the whole world. Not a single religion in the world can be accepted. But apart from that, the concept of life after death in some form is found almost in every religion. Although it is also found in Judaism, in the original texts, yet unfortunately and I don’t know how, the Jews of the present days have rejected this fundamental article of our faith. And perhaps not all, but most of the Jews believe that there will not be any life after death. But that is exceptional. Otherwise, everywhere in the world there is this concept. No, but this concept has to be there fundamentally everywhere.
This is in which we are interested. In what form and what shape, we don’t have to find a common concept everywhere as to the details, how it would happen. But what is important for us is that everywhere the man has been believing somehow that the life here is not the end all. There has to be some continuation in some form after it. How? That is best answered by different people differently. Why this concept took root in that particular form in India, that is a different question altogether.
