Is the Quran referring to the mockery of the poor that usury promotes when it says, “O ye who believe! let not one people deride another people, who may be better than they, nor let women deride other women, who may be better than they.” (49:12) ?

The literal translation of the verse is what it is, that those of you who are better placed should not mock the poor or all, or who are weaker, placed below you in station. That is the literal translation, or essence I should say, of the verse he has quoted. So it could apply to this situation if he thinks in these terms only in the sense that ultimately it amounts to mockery of the poor people.

This whole system of usury and lending money and aids and everything, this practically amounts to the mockery of the poor people in a practical way, like they used to make April fools. It was not just a joke in words, it was a joke in action. So this is a mockery of humanity in fact. So if you mean that, perhaps this verse could be extended to this.
