In Chapter Rahman of the Quran, what is the meaning of the verse, “And they will be told: ‘This is the Hell which the guilty denied,” (55:44) in relation to the previous verse that states, “Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will ye twain, deny ?” (55:43) since Hell is not considered a “favour” ?

This question is from Surat Raman. Huzoor, Allah Ta’ala has said, Actually, sir, it has been said 31 times at different places. What I want to know is, sir, then there are three verses, verse number 27, Then Allah Ta’ala has said, Sir, these are the punishments which are said in the Holy Quran. How this translation, fits into these verses? Yes, yes. If you are not grateful to favours of Allah, then sometimes it happens that you deny his favours and exceed in your rebellion to him, and a time reaches where you deserve the punishment.

So the whole phenomena begins with your being ungrateful or ingrate to the favours of Allah, which are bounties of Allah, which are innumerous. So that means that an ungrateful person is much more likely to end up in hell than a person with a grateful nature. So this is why Kufr has both the connotations of denial of truth and also the state of being ungrateful. Both these states are mentioned under the same root word of Arabic, Kufr. Kufr means Kufran-e-Nimat, as well as denial of the truth, whatever truth it be. And this is why, A.S. has laid great stress on one’s being grateful.

So much so, that he was shown that the females were in excessive number in hell. When he was asked why, he was told that because they are ungrateful, generally speaking, more ungrateful than the men. So that is the phenomena which is referred to repeatedly in the Holy Quran. Although sometimes it is not the favours and bounties of Allah which are mentioned before this repeating verse appears, But the punishment is mentioned. Yet the connection between the punishment and this verse is this, that it is because of the denial of favours of Allah that you have ended up into hell and you have started deserving this punishment.

So how long will you continue to deny this? How long will you continue to be ungrateful to Allah? So this is the connection. This is what you wanted to understand. Because for the ayah, literally means, then which favours of Allah will you continue to deny? Read the translation. Which then of the favours of Allah will you deny? Will you train deny? Will you train deny, yes. The word alai rabbikumar means will you train deny? So what was bothering you was that here the favours of Allah are mentioned and just preceding this verse many a time in Surah Rahman, you see the mention of punishments which are not favours.

So what is the connection? The connection is that they are the result of denial of favours. So this verse is repeated to remind you that you have to be grateful to Allah. Otherwise you may end up into this.
