Questioner: Huzoor, before the Friday prayer, we normally say four Sunnah. Huzoor (rh): Yes. Questioner: But when we join Asr prayer with the Friday prayer, what should we do in that case? Huzoor (rh): Well, the minimum necessary is two rak‘at. If somebody knows that Asr is going to be joined with Zuhr—that is, Jumu‘a—two rak‘at of Jumu‘a cannot be said. So they should be said before that. These two rak‘at are to be performed even while you are on a journey. While other Sunnahs are forgiven—you don’t have to say the Sunnah during a journey—but two rak‘at of Jumu‘a are necessary. That is perhaps because Jumu‘a is originally four rak‘at, and the two Sunnahs supplemented the Jumu‘a. The two fallen rak‘at, you know, are supplemented by the two Sunnahs. But anyway, whatever the reason be, this is the addict (i.e., the established practice).
Questioner: Huzoor, I was saying always two rak‘at, but today, as I was not very sure, I did not say two rak‘at. What should I do in that case? Should I say it in the next following Jumu‘a? Huzoor (rh): No, no. Whatever you have forgotten, you should perform that when you remember it, if it is possible to do that. Questioner: I did not forget it, I just thought… Huzoor (rh): Anyway, whatever you have omitted—out of omission or forgetfulness, whatever it is—when you come to know of it, that is your remembrance, you know, sort of. So now I remind you that you should have said that. So you better say it when you are free.
