What is the meaning of the Quranic verse “We are your friends in this life and in the Hereafter. Therein you will have all that your souls will desire, and therein you will have all that you will ask for” (41:32) ?

Now, iddha is not asking. In fact, once I spoke on this very aspect, the arrangement and the true meaning, as I understand, matashtahi anfusukum is the general desire. So, people who love good things and better things, they desire things according to their own capacity, according to their own concept of pleasure and things. So, everything desires a thing according to his own background and his own capacity and the maximum he can reach for. This is why they say, fikre harkas bakhadra himmate us. The flight of each one’s imagination is according to his own capabilities. One can’t go beyond a certain limitation and everyone has a limitation.

So, if you have your own particular desires and you are given something different, that will not be heaven for you. That can turn into your hell. So, matashtahi is an important condition of heaven. If you don’t like meat and somebody forces you to eat meat, that will not be heaven for you. If you are a vegetarian, vegetable is heaven for you. If you are a meat eater, you should be supplied with meat. If you prefer fruit, then fruit should be provided to you. So, whatever you desire is a must for heaven. And that is the maximum that can be given to one with a standard set of desires. That shows that the heaven will not be one given set of values or things to be shared by everyone.

Heaven will be tailor-made, made to measure individually. Matashtahi Anfusukum tells us that it will be for everyone his own heaven. And his heaven will be according to his own reach of imagination, his own particular bent of mind. So, that is as far as matashtahi anfusukum goes. Matadaun is much higher. Matadaun is your ultimate goal, what you stand for, what is your object, not just desires. And here, the higher form of heaven is mentioned, those who love Allah and do not do good things for the sake of any heavenly pleasure, but their goal is just Allah. They are mentioned in matadaun. Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa sallallahu alaihi wa sallam primarily, and following him, Hazrat Masih Maud alaihi wa sallam, and such people of such high status, this is why Hazrat Masih Maud alaihi wa sallam says, Hamara bahisht hamara khuda hai. Hamari ala lazat hamare khuda mein hai. My heaven, our heaven is our Lord. Our highest, the most sublime places are in our Lord.

So, that is in fact a commentary on this matadaun. This is what they live for. But they first acquire a much higher taste. For instance, now you can compare it to a situation in this world, which can be obtained in this world. Certain people marry for the sake of comforts and pleasures. And in Europe particularly there is a trend among the ladies to go for the values of life rather than the persons. And a young girl can happily marry an old man if he is well placed in life, if he is quite wealthy. They can sacrifice their own personal pleasures for the sake of that, because it is their goal.

But there are others who go for the persons who cannot live in peace, however comfortably they are provided, unless their companion is good. So such people always go for the companionship. And even in adversity they became loyal to each other, they remain loyal to each other. Because they can’t live without a high quality of companionship. And that is their heaven. If they are provided with other good things and comfortable conditions and good status, that is most welcome. I mean that is not what they dislike.

But the primary condition is companionship. So in matadaun such people are mentioned who must be with Allah. And Allah is their heaven. This is their iddia, that is the goal in life, what they crave for. And they will be provided their heaven. It has also been explained in other verses of the Holy Quran in various ways. But generally speaking this is the distinction as I understand it.
